7 Ways Your Vacation Rental Property Management Companies Can Integrate Within Your Community

No items found.

Vacation rental property management companies often face scrutiny from local communities, sometimes viewed as disruptive or even harmful to neighborhood cohesion. However, with the right approach, these companies can transform into invaluable community assets.

We advocate for a position to be created within your organization for a Community Ambassador, as this person becomes the liaison between the company and the community. As part of this role there are many opportunities to develop more positive relations with your community.

Here are seven ways to ensure your vacation rental business becomes a cherished part of the local fabric.

1. Support Local Businesses

One of the most direct ways to integrate into the community is by promoting and collaborating with local businesses. Create a guide for guests that highlights nearby restaurants, shops, and services. Try to pick locally owned and operated businesses and not franchise chains. Offer discounts or partnerships where your guests receive special deals at local establishments. This not only benefits local businesses but also enhances your guests' experience, making them feel like a part of the community.

2. Participate in Community Events

Actively participating in community events can significantly boost your company’s reputation. Sponsor local festivals, fairs, or charity events. Volunteering your time or resources for community clean-ups, holiday events, or local school activities helps to show that your company cares about the community beyond just making a profit.

3. Implement Community-Friendly Policies

Adopt policies that address common concerns related to vacation rentals. Implement strict noise regulations, clear trash disposal guidelines, and maintain property upkeep standards to minimize disruptions. By proactively addressing these issues, you can alleviate the common concerns of your neighbors and demonstrate a commitment to being good stewards of the community.

4. Engage in Open Communication

Transparency is key to building trust. Hold regular meetings with local residents and community leaders to discuss any concerns they might have. Be open about your company’s policies, plans, and how you are working to benefit the community. Create an open line of communication through social media, newsletters, or community forums to keep everyone informed and involved. An annual open house BBQ is a great way to give back while also connecting with your community to hear their concerns.

In addition, provide the neighbors of your properties with information on how to communicate with you should concerns arise with guests. Ensure your staff are trained and prepared to work with these people to foster strong relationships.

5. Invest in Community Improvements

Consider setting aside a portion of your profits to invest in community projects. This could range from sponsoring local sports teams to contributing to the renovation of public spaces like parks or community centers. Such investments not only improve the local environment but also show your dedication to the community’s wellbeing.

6. Educate Your Guests

Guests often need guidance on how to be respectful visitors. Provide them with a comprehensive guide that includes local customs, noise ordinances, parking rules, and tips for being a considerate neighbor. This helps to minimize friction between guests and residents, fostering a more harmonious relationship.

7. Collaborate with Local Government and Associations

Work closely with local government bodies and neighborhood associations to align your business practices with community expectations. By being actively involved in local planning and development discussions, you can better understand and address the community's needs. This collaboration can also lead to mutually beneficial initiatives that enhance both your business and the community.

In the USA, you can register your company with FEMA to have your accommodation listed as an approved accommodation provider for emergency workers and displaced victims.

The Ripple Effect of Community Integration

When vacation rental companies take these steps, the benefits extend beyond mere goodwill. By integrating into the community, you create a more appealing environment for guests, leading to better reviews and higher occupancy rates. Additionally, local residents who see the positive impact of your business are more likely to support and advocate for you, reducing opposition and fostering a sense of mutual respect and cooperation.

Personal Experience: Bridging Communities Through Action

From my 20 years in the Canadian Fire Service, I’ve seen firsthand the importance of strong community ties with accommodation providers. In my city, there are several hotels that have a standing agreement with the Fire Department and Red Cross to provide temporary accommodation for people displaced due to house fires or natural disasters. During press releases, these accommodation providers are often mentioned and thanked for their support of the community.

Call to Action

By taking proactive steps to integrate into the community, vacation rental property management companies can shift perceptions and establish themselves as vital, valued community members. It’s not just about mitigating negative impacts but about creating positive change and fostering a sense of belonging and mutual benefit.
